First look: Inside new Volvo XC90

Here are the first interior images of the new Volvo XC90, the carmaker's most luxurious interior ever, writes Trish Whelan.

A tablet-like touch screen control console forms the heart of the new in-car control system. This system is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of internet-based products and services.

Designers have used soft leather and wood with handcrafted details including a gear level made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glass maker, and diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and the volume control. These details add some exclusive playfulness rather than pure functionality says Robin Page, Volvo Cars' Interior Design Director.

The car is the first Volvo to use the company's Scalable Product Architecture which gives a wider range of design options improves drivability and allows the inclusion of the latest safety features and connected in-car technologies, while also increasing inside space.

Volvo have designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows, making the new XC90 a genuine 7-seater. Seats come with a multitude of adjustment possibilities.

The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment which can slide to make more legroom for those in the very back, or to increase loading space if the third row seats are folded flat. The very back two seats cater for passengers not taller than 170cm. They are also slightly centred, offering theatre-like view out the front. Second and third row seats can all be folded individually to allow load flexibility.

The Volvo XC90 also has a four-zone climate system.
