Volkswagen Ireland is now taking orders for the new Golf SV with customer deliveries starting in July, writes Trish Whelan.
The new model will sit between the Golf and Touran models. It will have all the advanced technology of the Golf hatchback range, but in a larger and more practical body. It will seat five plus luggage.
It is slightly longer than the Golf Plus that it replaces, a tad longer than the Golf and has a longer wheelbase. It's also somewhat wider and higher.
Luggage space at 500 litres is up 76 litres from the previous Golf Plus and this is extends to 590 litres when you slide the rear seat bench forwards. Fold these back seats to get up to 1,520 litres.
The line-up includes a 1.2 TSI petrol with 85hp and 110hp and a 1.6 diesel with 90h and 110hp, as well as a 2.0 diesel with 150hp. You can choose from 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes and a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The big seller is expected to be the 100hp 1.6 diesel in Tax Band A3 (€190 a year). Tax bands also include A4, and B1.
Grades are Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The entry level trim has air con, 5-inch touchscreen radio with Aux-In, SD card slot, electronic parking brake with hill hold; Electronic Stability Programme and two ISOFIX points in the rear bench seat.
The Comfortline, expected to be the most popular grade, adds a leather multifunction steering wheel, 15-inch Lyon alloy wheels, drawers below front seats, a larger 5.8-touch screen radio with Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, seat height adjustment and lumbar support on front seats, and some outside details. The top grade adds 16-inch Dover alloy wheels, Park Distance Control front and rear, chrome strips on the side windows, rain sensor and front fog lights including static cornering lamps. Inside, there are upgraded sports comfort seats, an auto-dimming interior mirrors, and ambient lighting.
Options include Adaptive Cruise Control with City Emergency Brake Function, Panorama sunroof, and Bi-Xenon headlamps including cornering lights.
Prices are from €23,350-€35,420.
