White is the New Black for Ford buyers across Europe

Ford Car Buying Trends 2014 - a study of new car buying habits in 22 countries across Europe - has highlighted regional trends and national differences that both conform to and confound expectations, writes Trish Whelan.

It found that white has surpassed black as the most popular colour for new Ford buyers across Europe while brown and orange are the fastest-growing colours.

Black, though, came a close second followed by grey. One of these three colours was the top choice for every single country except Ireland, Poland and Romania where silver (the fourth most popular colour in Europe) is the first choice (a silver Ford Focus is pictured above). It seems the Turks are the biggest fans of white while British car buyers are the most likely in Europe to buy a red Ford.

Another finding was that buyers in chilly Norway were the most likely to opt for automatic air conditioning (80%), ahead of Belgium (77%), and Netherlands (71%). Some of the most likely to buy cars with manual air conditioning were drivers in sunny Turkey (96%) and Spain (92%).

Spain, Greece and Italy attract millions of visitors every year to their sun-drenched beaches, but the Ford study showed that residents in some of the region's hottest countries are among the least likely to buy a new car with a sunroof!

Buyers in Norway, more known for snow than sunshine, were also the most likely to choose a new Ford with a sunroof (15%) just ahead of sunnier France (11%) and Germany (10%). Drivers in sunny countries, meanwhile, were among the least likely to want sunroofs: these included Spain, Italy and Greece.

Not surprisingly, Scandinavian drivers also were the most likely to look for heated seats in their cars. It also seems the Greeks, Spaniards and Romanians were the most likely to specify a cigarette lighter as part of a smoking pack.
