Peugeot has unveiled its new 508 range which will go on sale in Europe from early September and will reach Ireland in late 2014, writes Trish Whelan.
The car, to be produced at Rennes for the European market, builds on the styling and quality of the existing models and will include saloon SW and RXH diesel hybrid models. All benefit from new equipment, new exterior and interior styling and the latest economical Euro 6 engines. These include the 2.0 BlueHDi 150bhp 6-speed manual with C02 emissions of 105g/km; a new 2.0 BlueHDi 180 EAT6 saloon with 111g/km C02. For petrol, there's a new 1.6 THP 165bhp a choice of manual or automatic with emissions reduced to 129g/km from 144g/km.
The 163bhp 2.0 HDi diesel engine and the 37bhp electric motor offer a combined 200bhp 4WD and a combined fuel economy of 3.3 L/100km (85.6mpg). Peugeot is the second biggest seller of hybrid vehicles in Europe.
The car will also boast more technological prowess, character and style.
These new models bear a new grille with the Lion housed at the centre, emblematic of the marque's future models. There are other changes to the front and rear end.
The interior has changed also with the dashboard now including a 7-inch touch grouping together most of the car's functionalities resulting in fewer buttons on the central panel. A Head-Up instrument panel allows for great driver control.
New equipment includes a reversing camera and blind spot sensors, while options include Keyless entry and starting, automatic electric parking brake, automatic headlamp dipping, quad-zone automatic air conditioning and JBL Hi-Fi.
The new 508 is due to appear at this year's Moscow, Chengdu (China) and Paris Motor Shows.
A total of almost 370,000 units have been sold since launch.
