The third generation of the famous Audi TT was revealed at an exclusive preview event in the RDS in Dublin last night, writes Trish Whelan.
It is due here in the fourth quarter of 2014.
When the first generation Audi TT made its debut in 1998, its design was seen as nothing short of revolutionary.
The new car is 50kg lighter than before and has a lower centre of gravity and driving position and also comes with lower fuel consumption and improved driving dynamics with better handling. The revised quattro all-wheel drive system delivers greater high speed stability and traction.
At launch the new TT and TTS will be available with three four-cylinder engines featuring turbocharging and direct injection. Power outputs range from 184hp to 310hp. The most popular engine choice in Ireland will be the 2.0 TDI equipped with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 234km/h yet is also good for up to 4.2 L/100kms which translates into C02 emissions of 110g/km a new record low level in the sports car world.
While the all new car stays true to its heritage, Audi claims it embraces the digital age like no other car in the market; in particular, the new virtual cockpit, a multi-media interactive 12.3 inch panel which sits in front of the driver is a unique infotainment platform. The virtual cockpit is powered by two quad-core processors, one for the virtual cockpit including digital rev counters and speedometer, the other for the infotainment functionality like mapping, media playback and high-level search.
You type what you are looking for on the touchpad - an address a contact, a point of interest or a song title and the virtual cockpit will retrieve the results. The functionality is supported by in-built 4G data connectivity, even faster again which helps drive features such as Google Earth and enabling a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Audi MD Christian Gussen is pictured with the new TT at last night's reveal. Prices have yet to be announced.
