Ford Ireland is targeting a tripling of its current market share in the medium-size car segment with the new Mondeo due in November, writes Brian Byrne.
Company MD Eddie Murphy says that though it is a declining segment both in Ireland and across Europe, he'd be satisfied to have new Mondeo reach a 3 percent market share here, which is where it used to be. The runout current Mondeo stands at 1 percent.
He said Ford will become more competitively aggressive in the growth area of crossover/SUVs, with the Kuga, recently-arrived EcoSport, and the premium Edge SUV coming here next year.
On the position of the car trade here at the moment, he said everybody is seeing an upside. And he said the introduction of the dual-period registration system has been 'very worthwhile'. "July 142 sales will pan out around 16,000 cars, and that is above everybody's expectations. And while some of that is at the expense of lower May and June sales, it will be an overall net increase."
He added that the dual-period registration system has allowed car distributors to address the market at a time when previously it wouldn't have been worthwhile.
