New engines from Jaguar

Jaguar Land Rover has developed a new family of engines which will power a number of new and revised models from the group in coming years, writes Brian Byrne.

Under the name Ingenium, the engines have been designed and are being built in-house by the company's own engineers.

They will use patented anti-friction technologies and will also be substantially lighter than equivalent power units in use by JLR today.

They will be in petrol and diesel, and can be scaled to different sizes and outputs from a basic modular design.

The first Ingenium engine to go into volume production will be a 2.0-litre diesel, in which friction is reduced by 17 percent compared to the current equivalent. It is likely to be used first in the upcoming smaller Jaguar saloon, the XE.
