July 5 will mark SKODA's eleventh year as the official partner and official vehicle supplier of the Tour de France; the world's third largest sporting event, writes Trish Whelan.
SKODA will provide 250 vehicles to support Le Tour. Collectively, this fleet will drive approximately 2.8 million kilometres during their service in Le Tour. Since 2004, the SKODA support fleet has covered almost 28 million kilometres without recording a single break down.
The 'Red Car', the red SKODA Superb leading the cyclists (pictured above), is widely visible to all the fans. Throughout Le Tour, it will be serving as a kind of mobile control centre. From it, the Le Tour director will be giving the green light to start the race every morning. It is also from where he organises the traffic movements around the peloton and keeps in touch with the marshals.
Also taking place on Saturday 5 July is the 2014 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle where SKODA is the official vehicle supplier. The local event is the largest one-day charity fundraising event in Munster and attracts 9,500 cyclists annually. The company's commitment to local cycling also includes partnerships with the Tour de Conamara and the seven event SKODA Cycle series.
Raymond Leddy of SKODA Ireland explains the company's commitment to cycling. "SKODA has long standing connections with cycling; the company itself originated overt 100 years ago when they first started making bicycles. At home here in Ireland, nearly 14,000 people will take part in SKODA supported events."
This weekend, they will have a physic available for cyclists after they complete the Ring of Kerry and will have bike mechanics available on the Friday evening to look at participant's bikes.
SKODA have expanded their bike range to 14 bicycles, including 7 mountain bikes, 2 racing bikes, 3 junior bikes, one trekking bike, and an electric bike.
