Fastest SUV in the world?

This is Jaguar Land Rover's claim to be the fastest production SUV in the world, the Range Rover Sport SVR, writes Brian Byrne.

The first model from JLR's new Special Vehicles Operations unit to be offered in volumes, it is powered by the 550hp 5.0 V8 used in a number of JLR high performance offerings.

The car has a special version of the 8-speed automatic from JLR, with shift times reduced by up to 50 percent. It also holds the current gear while cornering to provide the driver with the optimum response when accelerating out of a turn.

Air suspension and magnetic dampers are standard, and the SVR has an upgraded suspension compared to the standard RR Spport.

Visually the car gets enlarged air intakes at the front and a quad exhaust system at the rear with a wing spoiler and diffuser. There's also a new fender vent, and special side mouldings.

The car has special leather seats and trim in turned aluminium or carbon fibre.
