New X1 will be FWD, 4WD

After just one generation on its original RWD platform, the next version of the BMW X1 (current one above) will be built on the front wheel platform developed for the new 2-Series Active Tourer (below), writes Brian Byrne.

The new car will be smaller than the current one, and will launch in European markets next June. It will compete directly with the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Power units will include a number of 3- and 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and the car will be available with 4WD. A plug-in hybrid is also planned, based around a 1.5 3-cylinder petrol engine.

The 2-Series Active Tourer goes on sale towards the end of this year.
