Citroen have unveiled their DIVINE DS concept ahead of the Paris Motor Show in October, writes Trish Whelan.
It represents a vision of the future for the DS brand, now a brand in its own right, combining sophistication with advanced technology.
Designed in Paris, the concept reflects the combined input of several prestigious fashion names like Lesage for embroidery and crystals from Swarovski.
Features include a 10.4 inch HD Touch Drive interface, laser headlights and a holographic display.
This is a compact 4-door car with powerful styling, taut lines and a low driving position. Strong, sensual curves contract with graphic features sculpted in chrome and the metallic grey bodywork has a subtle shimmer that accentuates its lines.
It is equipped with a 1.6 THP turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine developing 270bhp which Citroen claims has 'outstanding performance'. Maximum torque is 330Nm and emissions are 145g/km C02. The engine is Euro 6 compliant.
Graphic features include the 'DS Wings' at the front, dramatic lines on the sides, and the unique roof design which resembles the scales of a reptile! These scales feature alternating effects - matt and satin, opaque and transparent - to play on the light inside and outside the car through changing reflections. The scale pattern extends over the rear window and can be seen also on the door mirrors.
The cabin design features a high-tech layout with three interchangeable interior ambiences, each with its own original and unique style - Male, Parisienne Chic and Fatale Punk, so customers can personalise the interior trim to reflect their own personality.
The concept also features the latest in in-car technology. The central console, like a backbone for the car, sets out the driving functions. Its white gold covering contributes to the car's overall sophistication. Controls are grouped on a HD Touch Drive interface with a spectacular 10.4-inch screen. Located on the overhead console, this multifunction screen frees up space on the dash and includes a function that replaces the rear-view mirror. A head-up display shows essential driving information. Even toggle switches are decorated with carefully chosen gemstones. Citroen claim the rectangular steering wheel 'is a work of sculpture, promising new driving sensations' while the special leather seats are a take on the existing DS watch strap design.
The front passenger gets special treatment with a single continuous drape that enfolds the console and dashboard, forming a twist as it reaches the door inserts; part of the haute couture experience.
There are opening facets on the rear window that optimise the car's aerodynamic performance. One of these includes a camera for better rear visibility.
This concept sits on 20-inch alloy wheels - the floating spokes appear to be disconnected from the hubs, giving the wheels a very unique look.
Citroen say the DIVINE DS concept 'is the very essence of what DS is and what it will be'. "A perfect alliance between sophistication and technology and a modern take on French elegance".
