More colourful, brighter HUD from Land Rover

Windscreens were once just for looking through without getting flies in your eyes, but now they're increasingly a medium for providing information, writes Brian Byrne.

Heads-up displays have migrated from fighter jets to cars at every level in recent years, but the latest system, to become available from Land Rover, will bring the technology to new dimensions.

Using a laser holographic technique, the new HUD system will provide better colour saturation, brightness and contrast, and so more quickly assimilated information such as road speed, gear position, turn-by-turn navigation, and traffic sign recognition.

All functions can be switched on or off, brightness can be increased or decreased and the vertical position of the display can be adjusted from the cluster menu.

Movies projected for the passenger side might be next?

The system will be on view on the special edition SW1 Evoque at Paris next week.
