New Mondeo spec and prices announced

Mid-and high-series models of the all-new Ford Mondeo are now available to order with prices starting from €28,995, writes Trish Whelan.

The new Mondeo will arrive in Ford dealerships by late November. Further variants and powertrains will launch early 2015.

Ford say the new car will deliver class-leading driving dynamics, innovative technology, greater refinement and craftsmanship, and a sophisticated design.

Just two series will be available initially, Zetec and Titanium. Body styles will include five-door and a wagon variant.

In 2015, the range will be extended to include an All-Wheel-Drive diesel variant, as well as a new hybrid electric vehicle version.

"The all-new Mondeo is a significant new chapter for a car that has been one of Ireland's favourite vehicles since it first arrived here more than 20 years ago," said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland. "The new Mondeo will make high specification and premium features accessible to even more drivers - including our industry-first Inflatable Rear Seatbelt and Ford's first LED headlights in Europe."

Standard specification on the Zetec model includes: 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, quickclear windscreen, day-time running lights, trip computer, MyKey, SYNC, cruise control, leather steering wheel/gear lever, power front and rear windows, and Auto Start Stop.

The Titanium adds: 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome door-line, auto lights and wipers, power-fold mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, Lane Keeping Aid, Traffic Sign Recognition, SYNC Gen 2, an 8-inch touchscreen, sports seats and an auto dimming mirror.

New Mondeo will feature an advanced version of Active Park Assist with Perpendicular parking which allows drivers to detect suitably-sized parallel parking spaces and reverse hands-free into spaces parallel to the road, and side-to-side with other cars. This parking feature will be supported by both Park-Out Assist (which helps drivers exit parallel parking spaces, and Side Parking Aid which shows on the screen any obstacles to the sides of the vehicles, as well as to the front and rear.

Ford's Inflatable Rear Seatbelt technology, a first in Europe, means the belt rapidly expands to disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional seatbelt.

The SYNC 2 connectivity system with advanced voice control, and an 8-inch colour touchscreen, will enable drivers to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using simple conversational language.

MyKey technology enables Mondeo owners to programme a key, usually for younger drivers. MyKey can now inhibit incoming phone calls as well as restricting the top speed; preventing deactivation of driver assistance and safety features; reducing the maximum volume of the audio system, and disabling the system altogether if driver and passenger are not using safety belts.
