SsangYong Motors Ireland began the 60th anniversary celebrations of the brand this week by getting down and dirty (and wet) in the off-road track at Carton House, writes Brian Byrne.
The Korean franchise re-entered the Irish market early last year with a range of passenger and commercial vehicles distributed by Harris Commercials. They include the Korando, Korando Sport, Rexton W and Rodius, and in 2015 another brand new small SUV is expected to the range.
Joe Harris, CEO SsangYong Motors Ireland, says the brand has a history that is steeped in strong off-road capabilities. "Many people will be surprised to hear that SsangYong first cut their teeth manufacturing off-road vehicles for the American army," he added.
During off-road 4X4 days that were held in Carton House throughout the week, SsangYong invited the press, dealers and public to test their range of cars through muddy terrain, steep hills and treacherous descents.
"Agricultural consumers and business owners are where most of our sales will be in early 2015," Joe Harris says. "We’re quickly becoming known as the go-to brand for commercial vehicles. In the passenger market we’ve experienced success with the medium sized crossover Korando and aim to build on the success of the Korando with the launch of our new X100 model in July. It will be our first 1.6 engine and will come in petrol and diesel. It will also mean we will have a car for every family size — from the 7-seat Rodius to the medium sized Korando crossover right down to the compact X100."
SsangYong sales have grown by 41 percent in the European market since 2013, and the brand expects continued growth internationally and nationally over the coming year.
