Alfa Romeo is demonstrating how much it will depend on performance for its resurgence by producing a 480hp 2.9 V6 petrol engine for the new mid-sized sports saloon launching next year, writes Brian Byrne.
With the brand's return to the US market spearheaded by the 4C sports car, performance will be the key halo to advance the brand's model range in that market.
The V6 will be among a range of new engines, including a new 3.0 diesel currently in development with Fiat-owned VM Motori.
A 2.0 turbocharged petrol unit will have power outputs from 180-330hp, according to reports on the engine initiative, and there will also be a 2.2 diesel four in the range with 135-210hp available.
