New BMW 1 Series range for 2015

BMW have announced the arrival of their new 1 Series range for 2015, writes Trish Whelan.

The New 1 Series is offered in three- and five-door body styles.

Some subtle but key differences have been made to the front and rear of the car.

Inside, the cockpit is more sportier and comfy thanks to improved design and the materials and fabrics used; there's a new cloth fabric for the seats, or the option of a cloth/leather combination.

All new 1 Series models feature the freestanding 6.5" Control Display, the controller wheel mounted on the centre console, and the direct menu control and favourites buttons.

The 2015 range sees the introduction of three- and four-cylinder units from the BMW Group's new engine family, plus an expansion of the standard-fit BMW EfficientDynamics technology. These new engines bring a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 12 percent while providing more power and sharper responses.

Engines offer as much as 326hp in the new M135i with C02 emissions as low as 89g/km in the new 116d EfficientDynamics Plus edition. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission has also been improved and two variants of the 1 Series come with BMW's xDrive four-wheel-drive system.

The 118i and 120i are powered by a 1.6 four-cylinder engine developing 136hp and 117hp respectively. The 2.0 four-cylinder engine in the 125i provides 218hp and with 310Nm of torque, the car can sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds. The top of the petrol range remains the M135i with power now increased to 326hp. It can do this time in 4.9 seconds, but has the ability to return 37.7mpg.

Diesels include a 1.5 three-cylinder engine in the new 116d. There's also a 118d 150hp while the 120d develops 190hp. The 125d outputs 224hp which enables it to reach 100k/h from rest in 6.3 seconds.

Most 1 Series variants are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard but the 125d and 120d xDrive both feature the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox, otherwise an option. There's also an enhanced range of standard equipment.

Prices start from €30,050.
