Electric driving 'to become cheaper'

Automotive batteries will deliver twice the output for half the cost within five years, according to key electronics supplier Robert Bosch, writes Brian Byrne.

Speaking at a car symposium in Germany this week, the company's chairman Dr Volkmar Denner also said 15 percent of all internal combustion engine cars will be hybrids by 2025.

The falling battery prices will make electric support for ICE powertrains much less expensive than now.

Robert Bosch produces many electric powertrain components and fully-built units, and also has developed key infrastructures for using electric and PHEV vehicles, such as the smartphone connectivity systems to manage charging costs.

Dr Denner also said that e-bikes have changed the future of 2-wheel commuting and leisure transport in the most dramatic manner wince the bicycle was first invented.

"For more than 100 years, riding a bike was a mechanical process. No one saw any reason to change it. Then along came the e-bike, and completely redefined a market everyone thought would never change. The same could be true for the auto industry."

There are already more than 120 million electric scooters on China’s roads. And in China, Bosch sells the electric wheel hub drive for such e-scooters. With a top speed of 25mph, this form of transport is fast enough for the traffic conditions in megacities. And their range of roughly 30 miles is sufficient for everyday journeys.
