What the company says will be an 'extensive' update for the Volkswagen Golf will be unveiled in early November, writes Trish Whelan.
The Golf is Volkswagen's most successful model, and the best-selling European car ever with more than 32.6m units sold by the end of last year.
The model is exported to 155 countries around the world from five manufacturing centres, in Brazil, China, Germany, and Mexico.
The first Golf owned by German Chancellor Angela Merkel was auctioned in 2012 for €10,156, while one owned by Pope Benedict XVI fetched €188,938 in 2005.
The most powerful Golf ever was the 650hp GTI W12-650, presented in 2007 at the GTI meet at Wörthersee.
