New Countryman drives Mini into new segment

This is the second generation Mini Countryman, which is larger, more spacious, and is the first Mini PHEV, writes Brian Byrne.

Now a fully fledged C-segment compact family car, the new Countryman has new engines and transmissions, an optional all-wheel-drive system, and a central touchscreen.

Power outputs will range between 136hp-192hp, with two diesel engines in the range.

There's more head and shoulder room for occupants, and a longer wheelbase means more legroom for those in the three full seats in the rear. Luggage capacity ranges upwards from 450L.

An optional electric tailgate and an innovative 'Picnic Bench' enhance the usability of the car in outdoor leisure situations.

Deliveries of the car will begin in the first quarter of next year.
