First electric truck revealed in Ireland

There was 'strong interest' expressed by a range of potential customers at the Irish reveal yesterday of the Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter electric truck, writes Brian Byrne.

The event was held at Weston Airport, and mong those attending was Denis Naughten TD, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, who described it as 'an exciting development' with the potential to 'transform emissions in cities across Ireland'.

The eCanter is at present in the prototype trials stage with real world customers in Europe, the US and Asia, and will be going on general sale next year.

The 7.5t chassis cab eCanter has a 4.5t payload capacity, and a range of 100km on a full charge, with the ability to be fast-charged to 80pc of its range in an hour.

The electric motor is powered by six 11kWh battery packs located under the cab and along the chassis.

Speaking at the launch, Cristoph Tauber of Daimler, owners of the Mitsubishi Fuso brand, said that seven in ten of existing operators of standard Canter trucks do less than 95km a day, and that '95pc of our existing customers could be reached with eCanter'.

The standard Canter range has GVW of 3.5t-8.55t, and there's also an EcoHybrid hybrid version which first went into production in 2006. Fuso Ireland operates a network of dealers across the island of Ireland.
