Volkswagen’s e-Golf makes electric cars more affordable as it is priced from €27,895 for a private customer after Government incentives of the SEAI grant of €5,000 and VRT rebate of €5,000, writes Trish Whelan.

This makes it one of Ireland’s most affordable electric vehicles.

The high specced e-Golf Executive Edition starts at €31,550.

2019 saw an almost 180c increase in sales of electric vehicles in the Irish Market making up almost 3pc of all sales.

Volkswagen Ireland’s Head of Marketing Mark McGrath said: “The e-Golf has all of the quality, ease of use and attractive design of the Golf, a car that has been synonymous with the family car segment, but with a fully electric drivetrain, with zero emissions and with a range of 231kms (WLTP rating) which is 14 times the average private car journey and more than 16 times the average Irish person’s commute to work.”

CSO figures show that the average commuting distance in Ireland is 14.7kms (CSO 2016 figures).

A Government grant up to €600 is available towards the purchase and installation of a home charger unit. This is in addition to the VRT rebate and SEAI grant for electric vehicles.
