Registrations of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars jumped three-fold in 2020 over the previous year, writes Brian Byrne.
According to data analysts Jato Dynamics, the 1.21m units for 2020 represented 10.6pc of the total market, compared to 3.1pc in 2019. The organisation said it was a year of 'unexpected challenges and significant change' for the automotive industry, but average automotive CO2 emissions over 21 surveyed countries in Europe reduced by 12pc.
This was a 'demonstration of significant progress' by manufacturers in meeting the European Commission's CO2 targets, the organisation said.
