90 years of Skoda Superb

It's 90 years since the Skoda Superb nameplate was first rolled out by the Czech brand, writes Brian Byrne. The car offered comfortable transport for up to seven people, and established the company as a producer of refined and technologically advanced automobiles.

The Superb model was retired in 1949, but revived again in 2001 when the brand had become part of the Volkswagen Group. It is now in its fourth modern generation.

Available as a hatchback or Combi estate, today's Superb follows the comfort and innovation ethos of the first version, and offers choices from FWD or AWD drivetrains, petrol and diesel engines, and hybrid and plug in HEV variants.

Some 1.6 million units of the modern Superb have been sold since 2001.
