Cars sales up, EVs strongly, on last year sales

Toyota, VW and Hyundai top selling brands.

Car registrations for the first quarter of the year are up 4pc over the same period last year, with 64,824 registrations writes Brian Byrne. But battery electric cars are up by 29pc.

According to the end of March figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, the market share of EVs is now at 15.3pc with 9,978 electric cars registered between January-March. Hybrid cars represent almost a quarter of all sales, and plug-in hybrids are at 14.14pc. Diesel cars continue their slide in buyer preferences with less than 17pc of sales.

Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai are the overall top-selling brands, with Volkswagen, Kia and Hyundai the top-selling electric brands.
