B-Class aimed at young families

by Brian Byrne. The new Mercedes B-Class, which has recently had its European Press Launch in Spain, is aimed at young family buyers in the compact MPV segment dominated by Opel's Zafira and Renault's Scenic.

Built on the same architecture as the new A-Class, but larger, the B-Class is aggressively targeting 'other brands' for its new car, with more than half of sales being of the 'conquest' variety, according to Marion Friese, M-B head of product management for A- and B-class models.

Sales of the B class start in European markets in June.

Mercedes is pricing the B class in Germany at about €22,243. In Ireland's VRT regime, it will be considerably more.
