More than two-thirds of the company's sales at the moment are in Japan, with Malaysia as its second biggest market.
In Europe, Germany is the biggest single market for the brand, accounting for 10,000 of the some 26,000 Daihatsus sold in Europe in 2004.
The European drive for growth will mean some new European-focussed models. The latest Sirion, launched in Ireland earlier this year, was designed by Giugiaro in Turin.
