by Brian Byrne. A new 'driver protection module' in which the steering wheel, knee bolsters and pedals all collapse has been developed by automotive supplier Delphi.
The system is said to be able to reduce injuries to lower parts of the body by 10 per cent without the use of pyrotechnical devices such as extra airbags.
It should also mean that existing airbag systems can be designed to operate with less force.
Delphi says it is already in discussion with two carmakers interested in using the system, which doesn't take up any additional space in the car.
The technology will be ready for 2009 model-year cars.
