Review of tyre regulations plea

The Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) has called for a review of the legal minium tyre tread depth for all cars.

The associations comment comes in the wake of the verdict in the inquest into the tragic death of Ms Mary Seavers, where the jury recommended that there should be a review of the legal minimum tyre tread depth for all emergency vehicles.

In the interests of public safety, the association says this review should not apply just to emergency vehicles, but to all vehicles on our roads.

It cites research which showed that tyres with the legal tread depth of 1.6mm had an 80 percent deterioration in braking performance in comparison with new tyres.
