The platform which will carry the next-generation Fiat Stilo has been specifically designed so that the car will achieve a 5-star rating in the Euro ENCAP tests.
What the company designates as its 'Compact' platform is a development of the current Stilo's architecture.
And Fiat is also trying to interest other carmakers in taking the platform, to achieve cost savings.
The platform will also be used for cars from Fiat's Alfa Romeo and Lancia subsidiaries. It will be further developed for these applications, and is expected to include 4WD capability.
The first Alfa to use it will be the 147 replacement, due in 2008.
