Transport minister Martin Cullen says the current Provisional Driving Licence will be scrapped in favour of a Learner Permit which will have severe restrictions attached.
He was speaking at the Fianna Fail Conference.
The restrictions, believed to include double penalty points for traffic offences and a zero tolerance alcohol limit, will also apply for a period after the driver has gained a full licence.
There are an estimated 400,000 drivers with Provisional Licences. And there would be difficulties implementing a new regime until the current long driver testing backlog is eliminated. BB
