More Irish travel out

More people travelled abroad from Ireland in the first quarter of the year than came in here as visitors.

According to the Central Statistics Office, this is a first since such records were begun in 1990.

Irish residents took more than 1.57m trips, spending 1.14 billion euros. Incoming visitors for the period amounted to 1.48m, and they spend 819 million euros here.

The outward trips represented a 17 percent increase on those made in the first quarter of 2006, while incoming trips were up by 6 percent. BB.
