ENCAP tests to get tougher

Changes mooted to the Euro NCAP crash test programme will make it harder for cars to achieve the top five-star rating.

The programme is backed by the European Commission and in recent years the numbers of cars achieving the top standard has increased dramatically.

Carmakers, particularly Renault, have used the top results as prized marketing tools.

But the ENCAP organisation plans to include active safety technologies such as anti-whiplash headrests and electronic stability control systems in future testing.

Current test results are based only on passive safety.
