BMW's fleet of hydrogen powered 7 Series cars are attracting big celebrity gigs, such as the one driven by Cameron Diaz to this year's Oscars, but they have a long way to go before they save the earth.
Apart from the expensive technical challenges of keeping hydrogen fuel at -253deg, the big 7s are also sluggish, their 6.0 V12s having been detuned to just 260hp, almost halving the normal 7's acceleration.
The experimental cars are also more expensive to run. They are bi-fuel, with their 64-euros tank of hydrogen driving the car just 200 kms, while the 100 euros of petrol in the other tank will drive it 500 kms.
On hydrogen the cars' engines are also noisier to the point of being rattly.
But the move to the holy grail of the hydrogen economy has to start somewhere.
