Car sales up, and down

The new cars sales figure for July (16,418) was up 24.85 percent from July 2007 (13,150), while sales for the first seven months of the year (140,479) were 15.4 percent down on the same period in 2007 (166,031).

Also, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, the average new car registered in July 2008 emits 21.4 g/km less CO2 than those registered in July 2007.

The total of new cars to the end of July this year is the same level as the total new cars sold in the whole of 2003, which was 'a good year' according to SIMI.

Light Commercial Vehicle registrations for the first seven months of 2008 (26,326) are down 26.66 percent on the same period last year (35,894). Heavy Vehicle (HGV) registrations are are down 25.27 percent (3,070) for the year to date to end of July 2008, compared to the same period in 2007 (4,108).
