Ford has released full details of its 2009 Focus RS, the 22nd Ford car to carry the initials since the Escort RS1600 of 1970.

The car is powered by a turbocharged Duratec RS 2.5 engine, delivering 305PS and peak torque of 440Nm.

It has a wider track than the regular Focus, and a newly developed front suspension system called RevoKnuckle, which Ford has patented.

The company says the system negates the need for AWD in a powerful car.

Despite its power, the Focus RS returns combined fuel economy of 9.4 litres per 100km (30 miles per gallon) and an average CO2 rating of 225g/km.

It will do the 100km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds.
