Ford was the country’s best-selling car brand in a devastating first quarter for car sales, according to statistics from the Society for the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
Total sales in Ireland fell by 65 percent to 32,589 in the year to March. Ford, with 4,824 sales, or 14.8 percent market share, was the most popular brand, ahead of Toyota (14.6 percent) and VW (10.6 percent).
Sales for the month of March fell 64 percent on the same month last year. During that month, the biggest seller was VW, achieving a 16 percent market share.
The commercial sector offered no respite, with van sales down 79 percent in the first quarter to 4,122 units. Again, Ford was the top-selling brand, with 18.9 percent market share.
