No scrappage in Budget 'perplexing'

Ford Ireland boss Eddie Murphy says the absence of a car scrappage scheme in today's Supplementary Budget is 'perplexing'.

“The scrappage scheme is a proven stimulant to demand in weak economic conditions," he said this evening. "We are witnessing its positive impact on state revenues in other countries. That our Government should fly in the face of this evidence is disappointing to the point of perplexing. Aside from the increased exchequer revenues it would have brought, each 1,000 cars sold through the scheme could have saved 780 tonnes of CO2.”

In the absence of the hoped for scrappage scheme and in an effort to help stimulate the depressed car market, Ford have decided to extend its offer of €3,000 off petrol versions of the country’s best-selling car, the Ford Focus.
