Free viz vests for 65s-plus

A scheme through which people over 65 can get a free high-visibility vest has been launched in a joint promotion by the Road Safety Authority, the Irish Pharmacy Union and Age Action Ireland.

Supported by United Drug, the agencies are making available 200,000 of the vests free of charge through participating pharmacies.

The scheme is part of the Government Road Safety Strategy, with an emphasis on making the roads safer for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.

Almost a third of pedestrians killed in the 10-year period up to 2007 were aged 65 or over. Research also indicates that pedestrians walking at night in rural areas are 13 times more likely to be killed in a road accident than when walking in daylight.
