After their win in Brazil, the gravel round at Sata enabled the two Irishmen to further exploit their obvious speed on this type of surface. The entry list for the 18-stage 230km gravel rally included no fewer than twelve S2000 cars, including six Peugeot 207 S2000s.

The volcanic islands of the Azores are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, 930 miles south of Lisbon and 2,422 miles from the east coast of North America. The rally took place on Sao Miguel, the largest of the Azores islands.
