Eoin Murray is now lying second in the Spanish Seat Supercopa championship following a strong performance in Jarama this weekend claiming his first outright victory in this highly competitive series.
Murray qualified in 11th position for race 1 of the three race format. A downpour at the start of the race gave way to rapidly drying conditions. A quick decision was made by Eoin to switch to slicks tyres on the grid however the tyre change was completed outside the regulation time limit. Thus incurring the wrath of the race officials and forcing him and a number of drivers to start from the back of the grid. A strong drive from 30th position in the slippery conditions saw Eoin fight to 20th position at the end of the opening lap and ultimately finish in 12th place at the chequered flag.
Race 2, determined by the finishing positions of race 1 meant that Eoin, starting from 12th place, was in with a fighting chance to take good points from this race. In the event a strong performance in race 2 saw him climb to 6th position taking a good haul of points but more importantly securing pole position, on the reversal of the top six finishing positions, for the feature race on Sunday.
Starting from pole position, the former European champion dominated in a faultless light to flag victory. This was further underscored by taking the bonus point for fastest lap (1’42.419) in the process.
Eoin’s next race is 1st/2nd of August at Portimao in Portugal.
