Black taxis go to China

The iconic black London taxi will soon be making a presence in the taxi fleets of China, now that production has begun there in a joint venture between the British company that makes them and the Chinese carmaker Geely.

Manganese Bronze of Coventry is the last car company in the city that once was the centre of the British carmaking industry, and did a deal with Geely that gave the Chinese company a fifth shareholding.

Manganese is struggling in the recession no less than any other carmaker, with production down to 12 units a day. But the potential in China is huge, and very profitable in an environment which has a low manufacturing cost base.
