Renewed call for scrappage

With latest sales figures showing continuing losses, the motor trade has repeated that some form of scrappage scheme is needed to avoid a repetition next year.

Noting that the loss of two thirds of the market has resulted in the loss of jobs in the trade to the equivalent of an Intel this year, Alan Nolan of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry said a scrappage scheme would not cost the state anything but would bring revenue to the exchequer as well as saving more job losses.

He was speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland programme.
