The number of multi-car families could plummet if the results of a Europe-wide survey translate into actual consumer action.
The survey, by Europcar, found that nearly 40 percent of respondents are considering doing without one of their cars.
The economic downturn and environmental factors were cited as the main reasons.
More than 5,000 car owners from seven European countries responded. Italy had the highest percentage prepared to ditch a car, at 55 percent, followed by motorists in Spain, France and Germany.
