Sat-nav snow problems

Sat-nav systems should be used with care in the current snowy weather, because they can bring motorists to secondary roads which are not safe.

Gardai in Offaly have reported having to rescue a number of motorists from snowdrifts in the Sliabh Bloom Mountains because they were following their navigation system instructions instead of staying on main roads.

Such systems will generally try and bring the motorist via the shortest route, which may not be open in current conditions.
