Total sales for 2010 are now 21 percent ahead of 2009 and with pre-orders building look set to continue ahead of last year's low.
For the year to date, Toyota is the brand at the top with 4,036 new cars registered, edging out Ford with 3,931. Volkswagen is the third biggest brand in this year's Irish market with 3,225 units registered.
The top selling model to date is Ford's Fiesta, with 1,471 units, followed by the same brand's Focus with 1,348. Toyota's Avensis is third with 1,309 units while the same Japanese company's Corolla saloon with 1,213 registrations edged out VW's Golf at 1,198.
The number of used cars being imported into the state has also started to increase. Although still behind last year's figures by 25 percent this is a substantial increase on the 46 percent drop experienced in January.
