Full body scanners at Boston

Up to 450 full body scanners may be in use in US airports by the end of this year.

The Department of Homeland Security will be activating three of the devices at Boston's Logan Airport on Monday, the first units in a programme which will see 150 of the $170,000 scanners deployed in the next few months.

The devices, which show people's bodies underneath their clothing, will initially be used on randomly selected passengers.

They are already in use on trial basis in a number of European airports, including Amsterdam's Schipol and Leonardo da Vinci in Rome.
