Mazda is recalling a number of Mazda3 and Mazda5 models to fix a potential problem with the steering power assist system.
The cars involved were produced between 2 April 2007 and 30 November 2008, and include the first generation Mazda3, with either the 1.6 MZ-CD diesel engine or the 2.0 MZR petrolengine, and the Mazda5 with either the 1.8 or 2.0 MZR petrol engines.
In Europe, this represents a total of 40,260 Mazda3 and 30,242 Mazda5 cars.
Owners of potentially affected vehicles in Europe will be notified by Mazda from October 2010 onwards. The repairs are free of charge for the customer and will take between 90 and 110 minutes, depending on the model.
There are no safety implications from the problem, but parking could be made more difficult in cars where systems have failed.
