Mondello this weekend

The County Kildare Motor Club will be in charge for a two day event this Saturday and Sunday at Mondello Park which will see two different circuit layouts used on consecutive days, writes Fergus Brennan.

The Fun Cup UK endurance racing series will make a welcome return to race on the International Track on Saturday with an Irish Championship event taking place on Sunday on the National Circuit.

Having missed out on a visit to Ireland last season the Fun Cup makes its third appearance in Ireland this Saturday with a six hour race on the International Track. The series for VW Beetle look-alike racers takes place all over Europe with the UK based championship being the one to visit Ireland. The series for identical spaceframe cars will see twenty teams of up to four drivers per car compete in a single six hour endurance race which will be preceded by a single one-hour qualifying session.

On Sunday the racing will revert to shorter races and a shorter track as the Irish Championship classes take over on the National Circuit. Heading the bill will be the growing Irish Touring Car Championship which has been providing huge grids and unbelievable action throughout its inaugural season. The class is far from predictable with a number of different drivers having won races this season and dicing throughout the field.

The Ginetta Junior Ireland championship continues its series of races with another double header while the three Fiat championships, The Abarth Cup, Punto’s and Uno’s will combine to create one of the biggest grids of the day for their pair of races. A single race for Formula Sheane Single Seaters and a double header for a combined grid of Global Light and Striker Sports cars will round out the programme.
