Opel has announced a 160,000-kilometre warranty on all new cars purchased.
The company, which is suffering from declining sales related to the (now resolved) uncertainty over its ownership, says it is a 'lifetime' warranty. In average annual mileage terms, it could equate to 7/8 years.
The warranty will include the powertrain, steering system, brake system and electrical equipment, but there are 'terms and conditions'.
Up to 50,000km, Opel will pay all material costs on a claim, and a declining percentage will be paid from there up to 100,000km. Between 100,000-160,000km, Opel will pay 40 percent of warranty material costs.
Also, unlike the long-term warranties offered by Hyundai and Kia, it seems the benefit only applies automatically to the original buyer. Subsequent buyers will face a charge if they want the remainder of the warranty.
We'll give further details when we get them from Opel Ireland.
