Our 23-years-old car registration plate system needs review, because the 'seasonality' which it encourages causes difficulties for a number of 'key stakeholders'.
With 70 percent of new cars registered in the first six months of the year, it results in 'huge cost and staff pressures' on businesses in the first half of the year, says the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
According to SIMI President Eddie Murphy, there are positives in the current system, but he believes these can be maintained while 'improvements' are implemented.
He said the current system is 'high risk' to the State's revenues, if there is a bad start to the year. It also results in 'huge backlogs' for NCT testing in the early part of each year.
"There isn't a quick fix solution," he acknowledged. "But we need to open up the debate with all those involved, to see if we can improve the system."
